Wood and vinyl are the two most common residential privacy fence materials in South Florida. Both look great when new, both deliver real privacy, and both cost about the same to install. The differences show up over years of ownership.
Up-front cost
Wood is slightly cheaper at installation — typically $25–$45 per linear foot vs $30–$60 for premium vinyl. The gap closes quickly when you factor in the first few years of wood maintenance.
Lifespan in our climate
Pressure-treated wood lasts 15–20 years here; cedar 20–30. Premium vinyl lasts 30+ years with essentially no maintenance. Over a 25-year horizon, vinyl is almost always cheaper.
Maintenance reality check
Wood needs to be stained or sealed every 2–3 years to keep its look and resist rot. Vinyl needs a rinse with a garden hose. If you're someone who genuinely enjoys yard projects, wood is fine. If you're not, vinyl will make you much happier.
Aesthetics
Wood has a warmth and texture vinyl can't fully replicate, although modern woodgrain vinyl is closer than ever. For traditional homes wood often wins on character; for modern homes vinyl often wins on cleanliness.
Resale value
Both add resale value. Buyers in Pembroke Pines, Weston, Coral Springs and similar markets increasingly prefer low-maintenance vinyl. In older Coral Gables and Pinecrest neighborhoods, a well-maintained wood fence still reads as more authentic.
The honest recommendation
If you love wood and don't mind maintaining it, install cedar. Otherwise install premium vinyl. There's no middle ground we'd recommend.
